Costa Rican Coffee: Why It’s One of America’s Favorites

The Street visited Don Juan Coffee Farm in Costa Rica’s Monteverde area to see firsthand how a small coffee grower produces and educates visitors about the kinds of organic, gourmet blends that are in high demand, especially in the United States.

Coffee is the most popular beverage in America, second only to water, and social coffee drinking has become a cultural phenomenon in recent years. The popularity of speciality or gourmet coffee drinks has been fuelled by the proliferation of coffee house chains in the United States, led by Starbucks (SBUX) – Get Report and Dunkin’ Donuts (DNKN) – Get Report.

Small-batch, single-origin, fair trade, and sustainably produced have all become established characteristics that coffee connoisseurs search for in today’s coffee.

According to the National Coffee Association, coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world after oil, accounting for 1.6 percent of the US gross domestic product, or over $225 billion in revenue.

Nearly 60% of coffee consumed in the United States is ‘gourmet’ (brewed from premium beans), and speciality coffee drinks made from Arabica beans have become increasingly popular.
